Summary

Black Jack is a brilliant surgeon who operates without a licence. He succeeds at operations no one else dares to attempt, but demands outrageous fees, which makes the profession despise him. He lives apart, in a lonely house, with Pinoko, a little girl he put together himself from a tumour.

Each chapter is a complete story: a doomed patient, a moral dilemma, a rival such as Dr Kiriko, who practises euthanasia. Behind his cold mask Black Jack fights death and injustice, and the stories gradually reveal his past: the explosion that maimed him as a child, the surgeon who saved him, his thirst for revenge.

Planned for five instalments, the series ran for ten years and counts more than two hundred stories. It is one of Tezuka's most popular works; he was himself a doctor of medicine.
