Summary

Monmow disease, found only in a remote village of Shikoku, slowly turns its victims into dog-headed beings before killing them. The young doctor Kirihito Osanai is sent there by his chief, Professor Tatsugaura, who backs the theory of a contagious epidemic to get himself elected head of the Medical Association.

Kirihito catches the disease, finds that it comes from the water and not from contagion, and is sold, exhibited, reduced to an animal, from Taiwan to the Middle East. Meanwhile, at the hospital, careers are built on his disappearance. An indictment of power struggles in the medical world and of the rejection of difference.
